Preparing for Your Advising Appointment

Meeting with your academic advisor is a key step in making the most of your college experience. Whether you're planning your class schedule, exploring majors, or discussing long-term goals, coming prepared can help you get the answers and guidance you need.

Here are some tips to help you get ready for your advising appointment.

Review your information in DegreeWorks for accuracy and take action on any outstanding items

Log in to DegreeWorks and review the following information:

  • Intended major - Make sure your intended major is correct. If not correct, contact your advisor.
  • Review General Education requirements
  • Review Notes at the bottom of the page and complete any tasks assigned to you by your advisor.

Review the Program of Study for your major

Use the University Bulletin to find the requirements for your major. Be sure that you select the correct catalog year - this is usually the academic year that you begin your studies at App State. Your catalog year is listed at the top of your DegreeWorks page.

Review the Four Year Guide for your major, which can be found by clicking on the FYG button in the top right corner of the Program of Study page in the University Bulletin.

Review the Undergraduate Program page for your major and visit the departmental website that houses your major.

If you are undecided about a major, review the list of Undergraduate Majors and Explore Majors and Careers with the Career Development Center.

Make a list of classes that you are interested in taking next semester

Use your program of study for your major from the University Bulletin (ensuring that you select the correct catalog year) to select 5-7 classes that you are interested in taking for the next semester.

List alternate classes in case those you selected are full or there are conflicts.
