Some majors at App State have a language requirement. In order to take a language course higher than Beginning I, you must place into the higher level course.
French, German and Spanish: Placement tests are available online.
Other languages: Must get instructor approval. Criteria for placement varies.
The French, German, or Spanish placement test IS needed if:
- you took French, German or Spanish previously and you want or need to take that language at App State.
- you took the placement test previously, but nine months or more have elapsed without being enrolled in a language course.
Placement test IS NOT needed if:
- you have no prior experience studying French, German or Spanish. Students without prior experience in a language may register for the beginning course in that language (ex. XXX 1010) without taking a placement test.
- you do not plan on studying a language because it is not required for your major.
- you have at least 3 hours of transfer credit in French, German or Spanish. Students with at least 3 hours of transfer credit may register for the next level of the course without a placement test score; however, the placement test is encouraged to ensure an accurate placement.

Placement Test Instructions: French, German and Spanish
Language placement tests are conducted online using Emmersion. Each test contains questions on grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. The online test (Part 1) takes 20-30 minutes to complete. Depending on your score, you may also be asked to do a writing sample (Part 2), which takes an additional 20-30 minutes.
Taking the Test
- Part 1: Create or login to your Emmersion account. You will need to use your App State email address for your account to receive credit. Part 1 takes approximately 20-30 minutes to complete and contains questions on grammar, vocabulary and reading comprehension.
- Part 2: If you score higher than 425 on Part 1, then complete and submit the Writing Sample.
Academic Integrity
By submitting the placement exam or the writing sample, you certify that you are doing your own work, without the help of outside resources, online dictionaries, or translators. We expect you to do your own work on this exam.
Scoring
- Part 1: Record your score and placement level for use in registering for classes. You will be placed into the 1010, 1020 or 1040 level of the relevant langauge.
- Part 2: Record the date you completed the writing sample for potential higher placement. You will be contacted via your App State email with the appropriate course level to register for.
If you would like to take a test in a second or third language and you are unable to access the test, please email advising@appstate.edu. You will be provided with a link to access an additional test.
