For students starting in Fall 2025, class registration opened on April 30, 2025 at 9 am.
Why do we encourage incoming students to register for classes before meeting with an advisor?
- So you can start building your schedule right away, giving you immediate access to open classes
- To have you practice these skills - you'll register for classes on your own every semester
- To make your advising meeting more productive and allow more time for questions
1. Review how to register for classes.
Review and bookmark this Class Registration Guide which explains how to register for classes in AppalNet. Pay close attention to these sections:

- Common Registration Errors
- Hickory & Online Students
2. Use your resources.
Open these resources on your computer:
- DegreeWorks - see which classes you still need to take (and if you have any transfer courses or credit, how that is counting)
- Registration Worksheets - if you have fewer than 20 hours of transfer credit
- Course Prefixes & Subject Descriptions - to help you search for and find classes
- Courses Search - to look up course descriptions and prerequisites
- Program of Study and Four Year Guide for your intended major. Find your Program of Study first, then look for the FYG icon in the top right corner.
- Math Guide - to determine which math class you need to take for your intended major.
- AppalNet Self-Service Guide with Brief Videos and Screenshots
3. Get more help.
Review Registration Help in the Current Students tab for more tips for class registration.
You can adjust your schedule ("add and drop classes") until the end of the drop/add period. You can find this deadline on the App State academic calendar. Make sure you're looking at the correct term!

Hickory and App State Online Students
Navigate to Search for Classes in AppalNet Self-Service. After selecting the correct term, select "Hickory" or "Online" in the Campus field. NOTE: Hickory and App State Online students can take Main Campus (MC) online classes if the class is not restricted to Main Campus students only.
First-year Courses
First Year Seminar (UCO 1200) and First Year Writing (RC 1000) are first YEAR courses, not first SEMESTER courses. It's fine to take one or both in your SECOND semester.
Test Scores & Transcripts
Did you take dual enrollment courses in high school? AP or IB classes? Have you taken college courses elsewhere? Remember to Submit test scores and transcripts.
Undecided about your major?
Add some open Gen Ed classes or introductory classes in subjects you're interested in. Then talk with your advisor about majors you're considering.
