Advising Steps for New Students

1. Verify your intended major.

Check DegreeWorks to verify your intended majorIf you want to change your intended major, email prep@appstate.edu.

2. Submit test scores and transcripts.

3. Complete placement testing (if needed).

Placement testing is available for MathCalculus, Writing and Language

Use the Enrollment Checklist in your MyMountaineer Portal to determine if you need to take placement tests and complete the appropriate tests prior to registering for classes.

4. Review DegreeWorks.

Review DegreeWorks to ensure that all your credits have been added to your record.

  • If you are currently enrolled in a college-level course(s) or have completed a college course(s) that is not showing: Update your courses through your MyMountaineer Portal. Instructions are available through Transfer Admissions & Engagement
  • If App State awarded you elective (ELEC) credit that you think should be a specific App State course: Submit a petition for credit

5. Review these registration planning tools.

Registration Worksheets are designed to help first-year students with little to no transfer credit build their first-semester class schedule.

NC Community College Transfer Guides can be helpful for students who are transferring from a NC community college.

Find the Program of Study and Four Year Guide for your intended major in the most recent Undergraduate Bulletin. Review required courses, course descriptions and prerequisites, and a semester-by-semester plan for completing degree requirements.

6. Complete PREP, register for classes & meet with an advisor.

Once you have completed Steps 1-5, you will be ready for PREP (Pre-Registration), a series of online modules that will explain App State's curriculum and how to register. Plan to spend an hour completing PREP. The PREP course will open for incoming students for Spring 2025 on December 2, 2024.

Within two business days after you complete PREP, you will receive an email invitation with instructions for scheduling your required New Student Advising appointment. While you are waiting to meet with your advisor, go ahead and start registering for classes. The sooner you register, the better chance you will have to get the schedule you want!

I'm ready for PREP!
