Core Curriculum Checksheets


The Core Curriculum consists of 44 required semester hours which provide a foundation for the liberal education of all undergraduate students at Appalachian State University. The Core Curriculum serves as the framework for students to engage in common and unifying learning experiences within the diversity of the University. The courses are designed to broaden awareness, cultivate the intellect, and develop lifelong learning skills. Core Curriculum courses do not need be completed prior to taking courses in the major area of interest. The Core Curriculum applies to all students who entered prior to Fall 2009.  If you entered from Fall 2009 onward, you should refer to the General Education Checksheet and the General Education website.

English

Six semester hours. English 1000-1100 (1510 Honors may be substituted for English 1100)

Mathematics

Four semester hours One of the following: Mathematics 1010, 1020, 1025, 1030, 1110, or 1120

Natural Sciences

Eight semester hours. Must be one of the following sequences:

  • Astronomy 1001-1002
  • Biology 1101-1102
  • Chemistry 1101-1102
  • Geology or 1101-1102 or 1101-1103 or 1510-1511
  • Physics 1101-1102 or 1103-1104 or 1150-1151
  • Mini-Course science sequence which consists of one-half semester each in four sciences: physics or astronomy, and biology, chemistry, and geology

Social Sciences

Twelve semester hours. Must include History 1101, 1102, (or 1510,1515 Honors) and two courses in different areas from the following:

Students should consult the General Bulletin for additional information about prerequisites and special designators. Transfer students may need to meet with department chairpersons for determination of transfer equivalency for specific courses. Math proficiency must be shown by passing the math placement test or completing MAT 0010.
